Album Review: Tender Debut Human Duality In “Modern Addiction

Tender’s Modern Addiction is about duality or as, Hunter And Wolfer would put it, “the irony of vulnerability”. Beneath lyrics that are humorous in their honesty such as in “Nadir”, “I hate it when you touch me, but I’ve kept it under wraps / Get bored of trying foreplay and I think we’re getting fat”, are a plethora of true, inner debacles. Humanity can be a walking paradox; where hypocrisies and contrasting emotions clash to formulate beings that can feel everything and nothing, all at once.
Tender – Machine

We have all had those situation when we felt lie we were so “all over the place” that we were simultaneously nowhere. “Erode”, “Silence”, and “Powder” mix in Tender’s ability to mesh satire with sincerity. They can say the most outlandish truths about humanity’s heart and its basic mechanics. For a species driven by complexing desires and duties like in, “Vow” and “Hypnotised”, Tender have simplified into an brightening sound. While themes such as depression and repression are rampant, tracks such as “Machine” and “Illuminate” sound as if you are euphorically playing a computer game. Each synth and reverb feels press, propped, and printed as if Tender were forming a music, printing press. Their songs delve into the human spirit as if they were literary, but make listeners sway and move as if they were lightning. You cannot deny that this duo know how to make music that clouds over you like a neon-hued fog that is gusting over a young. Night-living crowd. Modern Addiction has bridged the moodiness of sound with the mysticism of being. While you feel as if you are melting in their darkened, rhythmic electronica like “Crawl” and “Blame”, you also feel like a still, vial of adrenaline has been placed within you.
Tender – Nadir (Official Video)

For however much you want to lay into the low, deliciously sombre vocals of James Cullen, you cannot help but want to stand. In some ways, that is the duality of human beings and its consistent perseverance; while you may want to cave emotionally, you find yourself trudging forward into the next relationship, dream, path, career, and fashion/ tech fad!
