Album Review: Dreams Are Superheroes In No One Defeats Us

Empire of the Sun’s Luke Steele and Silverchair’s Daniel Johns have united to create a super group that will make you feel like a superhero. They call themselves DREAMS, and their new album, No One Defeats Us, is pretty much exactly as advertised.

From the beginning, Dreams feels like you have entered a disco in Blade Runner. It is sexy, dark, and demands you to dance as if there was never any other way to approach the floor. “Movies,” “Love To Live,” and “Young Minds” invite you to move your body like you are taking a drag from a cig or a swig from a glass of champagne. You are simply motioning yourself like an old world icon in a future that is both neon and sanded; dry in resources but completely liberated in spirit. Not so ironically, every futuristic film portrays a world that feels abandoned to its darker spirits because all material things have waned. Yet, Dreams have more hope for a world that lets people be people rather than their pockets.
DREAMS – Love To Live

You do not need to destroy something to make it better or create something new, and that seems to be a recurring message in No One Can Defeat Us. When Johns and Steele unite their voices and harmonically digitize them, you feel like you are reading Vogue in 3022. There you find how, even scraps, swag and style can be embodied. It is unique talent to match your voice with an image, especially one as gaudy and brazenly attention grabbing as Dreams. For them, there is no point in hiding who you are in a world that pushes everyone to be hidden. The world does not need your help to lessen or destroy you, and the minute you decide, not just to fight back, but let yourself be; you will see NO ONE CAN DEFEAT YOU!

It is hard to describe how infectious and sexy this disco-punk album can be. From “Silence” to “Odd Party,” the Dreams are creating and analogizing beats so as turn Vogue a soundscape into something you feel with your five sense by just picturing it with your mind. Better yet, they do it all to empower listeners because it is not enough to dream of your confident self, you have to feel her/him, as well.
