Album Review: Emily Kinney Is Every Woman In Oh, Jonathan

Emily Kinney feels fresh like a bouquet of flowers. Her new album, Oh, Jonathan, makes you feel like you are living a romance in the city. As cars pass and skyscrapers seem to outgrow each other in height, the only thing that truly captures your eye is Jonathan: the emblematic name of “the boyfriend” that taught us how to love better even if it was through trials and tribulations.

From “Same Mistakes” to “Popsicle” there is an undercurrent of “bigness” to Kinney’s sound. Chords and drums sound like they are dropping over you from the sky, which is how loves feels. The minute it hits you, it feels like an angel has landed on your shoulder, but, as the verses in “Drunk and Lost” or “Mortal” show, that angel can turn into airplane crashing on you. No coupledom is steady and consistently joyous. You have to go through bad times to see if what you have is good enough to get better. Emily Kinney realizes this, and has a voice that simplifies this notion’s depth.

Kinney’s voice sounds as untethered as it  is unmalicious. She is clear and constant as she delivers vocal notes and poignant statements on what is to have love take you for a ride and be wounded that the ride was not smooth. We all get angry that our life has sufferings, but we truly believe that there is a day when no trouble will fall upon us. In Oh, Jonathan, Kinney is learning that that is not possible, BUT love can coat and conquer the the persistency of woes. Thus, the twinkling and twilights of her instrumentals in tracks like “Jonathan” and “Mermaid Song” are like love saying, “He may not be the one, but he is one more lesson on how to get him.”

In every relationship you learn, and Kinney has a folksy sound that embraces this unwanted fact. Nobody enters a relationship to learn; they enter it to love. Yet, you cannot love without learning. Oh, Jonathan is a sweet, simple record that testifies to this. To learn more about Emilly Kinney and Buy Oh, Jonathan on August 24 Click Here.
