Album Review: Florist Flower You With “If Blue Could Be Happiness”
Florist is so MOOD music, I cannot even STAND IT! The trio have created soft-synth pop for every moment she wanted to feel so in your feelings that lying on your couch felt like lying in an endless ocean. Their debut, If Blue Could Be Happiness, chills and even jerks a few tears in how it encompasses those gloomier days when you settle into a “loss” and wonder whether you will ever have a “win”.
Yes, I know I am using rather ambiguous vernacular, but winning and losing are defined by your perspective even if a universal sentiment. We all are playing into the same stories but different characters in terms of the job we did not get, the ex we did not stay with, or the talent we never furthered because we thought, “Why Bother?”. These thoughts feel constantly nagging, which is why If Blue Could Be Happiness seems like a dream/ call-out to the fact that, if we were as happy as many times as we were sad, life would be so much better. “What I Wanted To Hold”,“The Fear Of Losing This”, and “Understanding Light” are three of my favorite tracks, and come forth like a trio of songs written by Oprah’s Own writers. They are so clear and mellowed into the terror of uncertainty. While synths ripple in gorgeous delicacy, Emily Sprague melodically enlightens. She is so striking with her fricative vocals, you wish you could hold them in your hands like fireflies. A voice should not be so soothing over things that are quite contrast, but hers is! How we accept what we have lost, and keep hope that one day we will gain something of value again is the eternal basis of trauma. I wish I can say I never suffered a loss nor feared of losing more after it, but then I would not be human in such a statemen. Florist are HUMAN! They lives up to their name in If Blue Could Be Happiness; each song is flower that blooms and withers in beauty. Click Here To Buy Florist’s If Blue Could Be Happiness of September 29.
