Album Review: Home Body Release Their Spiritus

To Home Body, if there is anywhere in the world that you can get weird, it’s in a soundscape. In the wake of so many cultural, social, environmental and political shifts, as well as personal encounters with death, heartache, and magic, synthesist Eric Hnatow and vocalist Haley Morgan used their recording process to bring forth clarity. In Spiritus, they combine dark-wave with avant-garde pop to detangle the inner chaos of living in global chaos.

The world has become darker, which is hard if you have never been a “light” person. While I believe many people are good, I also believe many are suffering, especially from anxiety and depression. Thus, the growing cruelty and fascism of our world heightens a sadness that should have always been healed or, at least, worked on. I make this point because throughout tracks like, “Little Things,” Soft Stuff” and “Comet,” Haley’s voice feels like your soul trying to find stability. She annotates her voice to embody every person that realizes, even if the world goes to edge, they can’t.

Sonically. Spiritus is fashioned chaos. Synths, chord, keys, and basslines swim around like sharks in the waters of Jupiter. Hnatow combines animalism with mysticism to creates an imaginative, unpredictable soundscape, which is perfect the darkwave, club scene. He understands that this genre of EDM loves a seedy, cinematic ambiance. Yet, Homebody make it clear that such effects are purposeful and symbolic. For this duo, Spiritus, coming out April 26, was their catharsis. For More Information On Home Body Click Here.
