Album Review: Jai Wolf’s” Kindred Spirits” Is A Sonic Space Odyssey
Born Sajeeb Saha, Jai Wolf has traveled from his native Bangladesh to New York City, calling both his musical homes/ keepers. After his massive hit, “Indian Summer” the DJ captivated listeners with his classical music approach to indie-electronica. Not many DJs, like Jai Wolf, see their mixable like they are a modern Mozart making a symphony. Yet, Jai Wolf’s debut EP Kindred Spirits is more in symphonic. It is a space odyssey.
Kindred Spirits is filled with intergalactic sounds and spiritual vibrations that are representative of Wolf’s goal to show the cosmic force that is love. The trained violinist has traded his childhood lessons on traditional Bengali and classic music for the synthesizers of EDM. Through Kindred Spirits Jai Wolf elaborates his genius by revealing that electronica is an untapped platform for psychedelia. Psychedelic rock swept the 60/70’s era because it sonically produced a feeling of euphoria amongst listeners similar to EDM’s hold over the current generation of twenty-somethings: Millennials. Jai Wolf is fully aware of this fact, and uses his Debut EP to elevate this truth and become a “music danger” to other DJs/ producers. In realizing the depth of EDM’s capacity to alter people’s minds and spirits in just one three minute track, he then formulates six tracks that turn listeners’ souls into Wolf’s lava lamps; they are lightened and molded according to how he rhythmically flicks their switch. In This Space In My Heart Is For You, listeners will fee like they are entering Apollo 13. Wolf uses a smooth, subtle intergalactic rhythm that builds into his hit single “Indian Summer”. This track feels like you are in the biggest beach party in Jupiter. It still have the galactic vibe that will course throughout Kindred Spirits, but begins Wolf’s exploration of love through a rocket-ship of rhythms.
Kindred Spirits is Jai Wolf’s ode to the starriness of love. In “Gravity” (featuring JMR), Jai Wolf creates a bouncing bassline that electrifies through twinkled beats and JMR’s pulsing vocals on how love is the force that grounds you. In “Like It’s Over” (feat. MNDR) MNDR’s crystal voice sounds like it has been sprinkled with stardust to provide melodies that are spiritually cathartic/ therapeutic. The song is all about longing for a love that is leaving or gone, and MNDR’s vocals blend perfectly to escalate the sonic yearn Jai Wolf creates through a trap sound. “The World Is Ours” is basically Wolf’s love letter to music and its capacity to make you and your lover feel invincible. The song’s electrifying scope immediately strikes visions of couples dancing in the club and having a rare moment of tenderness between them. Through its vast synthetic keys, Jai Wolf has made a song that shows, through sound, the world can surround you, but when your are in love it is owned by you. The EP ends with Drive, an anthemic club track that is the perfect “jam-dropper” when a DJ wishes the zoom the crowd’s energy and remind them that young, alive, and dancing are three of the best things you can be.
Each track of Kindred Spirits feels like clean gatherings of supernovas clustering together to enter the ears of listeners. Wolf is one of the most detailed DJs to be rising in prominence by not focusing only on sounding unique but also giving attention to sounding masterful. Kindred spirits does not come off like a debut EP. Instead, it sounds like a full album of a confident, seasoned artist whom is owning his talent and his visions for it.
