Album Review: Nectar Makes You Want To Joji And Chill

I once described Joji’s sound like Jhene Aiko going to a strip club: spiritual, carnal, and sensually chill. He makes you want to sage with a bunch of gold chains around your neck. While his sound has always been distinct, Nectar is his full embracing of everything that works for him.

Casual high notes, sexy synths, and lyrics on loneliness! Check! Check! And CHECK! These are titular Joji staples that become the center of Nectar as he enters his next level as an artist. Out September 25, it seems befitting that it comes out on the 7 year anniversary of Drake’s Nothing Was The Same because, like that album for its artist, Nectar brings Joji to whole other sphere in terms of talent and potential fandom. While I can say I have been a proud member of Joji’s “Sushi Trash Club,” Nectar will certainly bring this artist much more, well-deserved attention.

With music seeming more vital than ever, I have been trying to analyze what people want. Frankly, we are all over the place, but what Joji captures is that ripe blend between chaotic and relaxed. He light-heartedly sings to devastation, and, in these times, that REALLY works. His beats are rhythmic, and no matter how he changes his tone or annotation, he always feels approachable. Moreover, he can go from crying over a girl to asking her to twerk on his face in a matter of seconds, which oddly feels relatable in the sense that people are dazzling, dirty, delusional, and delightful, all at once. We can curl up in a fetal position one second and then live it up in bottle service the next, and Joji gets that!

While Joji has always come off like a cool nerd or a thoughtful goof, Nectar finesses his sound and style to further he is, ultimately, a hit-maker. From “Daylight” to “Your Man,” he has some serious tracks that could be on radio replays for some time. Thus, for being an album called Nectar, Joji is bringing the juice.
