Album Review: Julia Michaels Sings Her Inner Monologue
Music is the opportunity to hear the same call for love and human compassion in a different way. Nearly every artist is discussing anxiety, and Julia Michaels’ Inner Monologue Part 1 joins the sung conversation, in hopes, that this settled theme refreshens a new listener.
What can be said about anxiety or self-doubt? They are crippling emotions that make everyone feel like their heart is limply beating. Tracks like, “Happy” and “Deep” have Julia singing to insecurities being like an invisible chain. Every time she tries to love herself or genuinely see if she is being loved by those around her, “the chain” rattles and muddles her clarity with its fogging noise. Yet, her music is all about minting such emotions away as if sound is the equivalent to sage.
Vocally, Julia peaks her voice like a mountain meeting the crisp air of the sky. She feels simultaneously light and girded to the ground like a hummingbird trying to fly away but getting caught in branches/ anxieties. Lyrically, she is giving beautiful verses on sad emotions. Moreover, she is doing it with radio ready tracks such as, “Anxiety (Feat Selena Gomez)” “What A Time (feat. Niall Horan),” and “Apple.” With how well-crafted and succinct this album feels, you can tell that Julia is a hit-maker.
Inner Monologue (Part 1) feels like Julia’s most confident display of herself, which is what every artists wishes to achieve. The balance between emotional rawness and mass appeal is not, necessarily, apparent, but Julia Michaels makes it feel like an obvious achievement. Every synth and bassline steams and steps as if you should dance in the rain, and Julia Michaels will teach you how to fearlessly do so.
