Album Review: Julia Rakel Gives You Indie Feelz

Absolutely, every person, at least once, has fed into their feelings. We all can be guilty of locking ourselves in our room, and looking for emotions within ourselves in the same way one would look for old boxes of stuff in an attic. Julia Rakel’s Indie Feelz goes straight for this dynamic.

Julia Rakel says that “indie fEElz” is an EP where “I try to describe the very different kinds of relationships we have with each other – and ourselves. This with a lot of irony, drum machines and way too many choirs parts. People is about forced acquaintances, A love letter is of course about love, You’re not getting it a desperate attempt to be understood, PDFILWM a sad celebration of friendships, Evel Knievel how we feel about our ego, and Moviestars – a flirt with how ridiculously we’ve all tried to be somebody we’re not.” I could not have said what she has done better than her, but the key to her sound and style is her own isolation.

Indie Feelz truly does have a bedroom pop, DIY feel that makes every synth feel like a blink in the eye of a young woman or man staring at their roof and wondering …. that’s it… simply wondering. Of course, like any artist, Rakel plugs her own self-observances of love and self-love; draping her philosophies amongst the fuzzed and fizzled arrangements of tracks like, “Love Letter” and “People.” Sonically, the record feels like soda dreams; gurgling bubbles of sweet, digital rhythms as Rakel’s voice anchors such haziness to her reality; reaching for vocal notes like one would for snow fall. Her ability to stay steady and pure in her vocality really does give you Indie Feels, which comes out March 15. Click Here For More Information.
