Album Review: Masego Sings To The “Lady Lady” of Jazz

Sometimes, I wish life was a literal jazz song. I wish I could go outside, and walk around like I was the opening sequence to Baby Driver; everything around me coming to life through music born from genius. I say this wish because Masego’s Lady Lady only makes me want such a dream even more.

Lady Lady is infused with funkadelic, jazzy rhythms that show life is a dance, and love is the ruby, red slippers you put on to shine as you move. You can envision Masego’s voice swishing and swaying through a ballroom; his notes the hands that grab your waist and grip to motion you into joy. His voice is luxurious and even tropical in flare like, soft linens gusting through a Caribbean wind. He has a flow to him that is so silkened, you do not know if he is rapping, singing, or creating a new form of speech. Hence, Masego’s capacity to mold and meld so many global sounds makes him universally appealing. Add on that he is singing to classic notions of love, and he feels like a new progression in music.

Everything about Masego’s Lady Lady beacons with vivacity, which amplifies the simplicity of verses in contrast to the complexity of his soundscape. There is a nuanced drama to his instrumentals; walking sonic, balance beams between genres like R&B, Rap, House, Trap, and, of course, Jazz. Such a feat makes him 100% distinguishable with tracks such as “Lavish Lullaby,” “Black Love,” “Prone,” and “Sugar Walls,” sounding sensuous and dreamily earthed. In an odd way, by summoning “old world” notions of loyalty and love, even using spoken words between he and his lover, Masego becomes a refreshing speaker of these virtues.

What is most exciting about Masego’s Lady Lady is that, in being so stylistically different, it revamps everything that feels old. Masego is not the first man to speak on heartbreak, respect, romance, or self-love. In fact, some of his ideas you have heard before. Yet, thanks to his modernizing, jazz instrumentals, you will listen with new ears to such classic adages. For More Information Masego And To Buy Lady Lady Click Here.
