Album Review: Mulatto Is The Queen of Da Souf

In a week where every man from the depths of the ocean, including the sea monster known as Tucker Carlson, has decided to discuss “WAP,” women’s empowerment, and whether we can sexualize our own bodies, Mulatto’s debut mixtape, Queen of Da Souf, is a perfect premiere. Joining the ranks of Cupcakke, Megan Thee Stallion, Cardi B, and Nicki Minaj, her sound, swag, and spit verses match the moment: women like sex, know how to defend themselves, and want to feel as hyped as a man when entering a room.

Sometimes, I wonder if the WAP controversy has been born because it discusses a woman’s vajayjay the same way a man would discuss his sausage. It matches, in Hip Hop, what we have garnered from men for so long: raw desire, bluntness, and demand. Give me what I want, how I want it, and if you can’t, I will socially isolate you until even your family denies knowing you. YUP! Mulatto TOTALLY captures that energy in Queen of Da Souf, which is why the record demands to be replayed for moments like the gym, the club, or right before that job interview. Women NEED to feel empowered, and part of that empowerment comes in the form of consent.

From “Look Back At It” to “My Body,” in some ways, what WAP and Mulatto are discussing is consent. Women saying I want you have my body, but you NEED to handle it and take care of me. After all, aren’t men providers? Thus, every track, from “No Hook” to “Muwop” is a forceful, fabulous affront to men who think they are controlling situations by believing they can make a woman swoon without fulfilling provisions and requirements, Moreover, Mulatto has the vernacular and vivacity to make sure he knows it. She is powerful, assertive, and, well, the Queen of Da Souf.

In some ways, Mulatto’s debut is a testament to both the bliss and burden of being a woman, especially of color, in the industry. To survive, you can’t be human; you have to be goddess. Throughout Queen of Da Souf, Mulatto’s is a goddess embodying the energy of confidence and No F**KS Given. That type of force allows her to captivate audiences by capturing what they wish they could be: a queen walking into a room with everyone bows to her crown.
