Album Review: Sampa The Great Is Back In “The Return”

When asked about “Freedom,” Sampa The Great responded that it is about “The balance of earning a living and expressing your artistry, and what you’re willing to compromise through it all.” The Return is the opus of an artist exploring what she is willing to give and receive as a person, global citizen, and artist in this world. The result is a record that is vivaciously unmissable.

From “Mwana” to “Made Us Better,” Sampa seemingly walks you through the streets of Sydney, Zambia, and Botswana. She walks you through the intimacy of Africa’s small towns and the business of Australia’s city-life by creating a sound that combines both. Her songs sound like calm chaos; as if you can hear the street lights or the chatter of people in percussive and stringed instrumental. It is absolutely invigorating because she makes rhythms sound like people. While her gentle voice flutters with poesies on self-strength, her beats come off like sonic conversations; secretly holding a conversation with your ears for you to feel better. IMAGINE!

Tracks like, “Heaven,” “Dare To Fly,” and “The Return” soar like a million pages being tossed into the sky, and all you want to do is catch each and everyone of them and turn them into a novel. With her voice being so cool-hearted, she turns emotions into literary-ease details. Hence, in some ways, Sampa The Great feels likes a character of legend. A young woman scoping the earth to find the peace in music and meaning she desires. It is a beautiful concept that allows The Return to have an accessibly spiritual aspect.

With so many features, The Return feels like a welcome party for poets. Yet, even in that, there is a humility and delicacy that brims through it. You are not afraid to hear the brilliance of someone trying to find wisdom. Actually, it is lovely and fun, which make Sampa The Great’s The Return celebration for those humble enough to enjoy life.
