Album Review: Sango Takes You To Da Rocinha 4

I remember hearing Sango’s remix of Frank Ocean’s “Cayendo,” and thinking Sango needs to go straight to Latin Music. His albums, bringing the Latin Heat, always shine to me because this Hip Hop producer understands what it is to add your own flare to your appreciation of a culture. Apparently, Sango hears my inner thoughts, (sending him prayers because it gets crazy up there), and he has served the heart of Brazilian sound with his titular aesthetic for heavy basslines that feel spiritually transient.

Sango feels like the most liveliest version of a trance. Actually, that is, officially, what I am making his name mean:

Sango: to enter a spiritual trance state after a beat drop.
How to use in a sentence: I was dancing with my friend when the DJ put Da Rocinha 4, and I went into a Sango state.

From “Kalimba Funk” to “Espirito Santo,” the album enters your veins. It joins your blood to fuse rhythm into it and transport you to a “favela” in Heaven; where everything and everyone whose vibrancy was considered poor in life will be appreciated in Heaven. Such a notion is essential to many religious, oppressed communities: the idea that there are no “favelas” in Heaven because up there is an actual place of equality. Okay! I am getting deep, but from “Detalhe” to “Maio,” every song feels like a new level in an alternate universe; beat plotted to match your footsteps as you jump from buildings to clouds to get to the prize.

What is the prize? A good time? I don’t know, but I do feel like Sango’s Da Rochinha 4 brings transportive elements to his sound that makes you feel like you are going somewhere. Is this place perfect or better? Yes. Do you know all the details? No. But Sango’s mixes drive you with determination, and his features with the likes of Vhoor and JXNVS make the record one to play when you feel like you need to get away. Da Rocinha 4 comes out September 25. For More Information Click Here.
