Album Review: Skating Polly Give You “The Make It All Show”

Skating Polly’s The Make It All Show LP is another step for the Oklahoma trio. Known for their sweet and sour nature, they are proving each “go around” in their music will further their gritty production. While they enjoy grunge sounds, their newest music is bigger, cleaner, and shows their sanded melodies can grain with sophistication.

One of the most exciting things about hearing artists is witnessing their growth. They really do get better and better. The Make It All Show combines Skating Polly’s desire to take the aggressive velocity of their sound and build its feminine mystique. Tracks like, “Hollywood Factory”, “Queen For A Day”, and “Free Will At Ease” slap and caress you with their hints of pop and lyrical questions on whether there is such a thing as “selling out”.

We all have seen a person seemingly joining the “dark side”: a cool kid, suddenly, sides with a bully, a once ethical lawyer joins a corrupt client, or a Hollywood star goes from humble to arrogant. Yet, it can also be seen that ugly ducklings become swans and insecure girls grow into fierce queens. For Skating Polly, what you do is a sign of who you are, and your choices reveal the aspects of yourself you had hidden. Yet, hiding is not a aura Skating Polly display, which is why “Flatwound Strings”, “This Vacation”, and “Classless Act”, bust with melodic gumption. Skating Polly take for who you are by confronting you if you are THE WORST! and joining you if you are crazy fun.

From Echosmith to Kate Nash, Skating Polly smash a cartoonish vibrancy into their sound to blast through haters and self-doubts. Hence, Kelli Mayo feels like a pop songstress gone mad, and eager to use her glamor to spark a riot. Her vocality, in particular, reveals the indie groups finessed approach to mischief.
