Album Review: Sleeping With Sirens’ Gossip Asks Millennials To RISE UP!

Sleeping With Sirens have measured up to their name in their new album Gossip; their first with Warner Bros. Sirens are seductresses with a spike of planned fury, and this band is doing the same. Gossip is a raucous of “in your face guitar” melodies, heart-beating drums, and a clear message: “To Mess With Me Is A BAD IDEA!”. I have always heard the tongue is more dangerous than a gun, and Gossip proves how words can ignite wars.

In a world where even presidents starts nuclear-tweet wars, Gossip feels like an album that riotously and deliciously approaches why a statement can lead to confrontation. Tracks like, “Gossip”. “I Need To Know”, “One Man Army”, and “War” are each embodiments of how the things we say and don’t say lead to heartache. Moreover, that heartache can lead to physical manifestations. When you are walking with a broken heart, you can do stupid things. From trashing yourself or destroying someone else, “ Trouble”, words leave people, even generations, with a bout of negativity that could eat away at perseverance, which is a huge key to betterment. This is a BIG IDEA to approach, and you might be shocked that this pop-rock album is approaching it. When you think of “mainstream”, you might be hardened and not even presume of its depth. Yet, in the same way every Beyonce song has a message of lady empowerment, Sleeping With Sirens tracks like, “Empire To Ashes” have a message for both Millennials and any gossip out there: “This world sucks, and I am not going to take it anymore!”. This might be the most poignant message to date; simple in sentiment and motivation. It is time to rise up people!

I do not know if there is, necessarily, a “quiet” song to this record, but does there need to be? You have tracks like, “Cheers” which uses hooks, harmonies, claps, and choruses to make you feel like a winner, and other songs like, “Closer” that do simmer in tempo to allow Kevin Quinn to show that he has the vocal capacity to seduce. For Quinn, when he is not grating his vocals like “Legends” to ignite your inner, wild warrior, he is trying to quake them with a calm that seems ticking for eruption. At all times, he seems readying to turn his rather plush voice into a plow of rage and reels of rebellion like in, “Hole In My Heart”. So many will flock to this Millennial Emo-Rock voice that knows how to balance this generation’s optimism with its desire to challenge old cynicism.
