Album Review: Soccer Mommy Explains Teen Angst In “Collection”
There are artists that bash their hearts into their music like one would put a pillow into a case. They push and push their feelings through until they fit, and finally can rest their weary head. Soccer Mommy is a 19 year old NYU student releasing her album, Collection. I cite her age and “student life” because it only adds to richness of this raw, emotionally wrought album.
Soccer Mommy – Allison
Collection plays like its name: a collection. It is a collection of the insecurities. hopes, dreams, and deprecations that can strike a teenaged girl anywhere and anytime. Whether she is in her room having “Benadryl Dreams” or in a lonely corner seeing that it is “3 AM At A Party”. Soccer Mommy treats music like it is her journal, and each day requires a sung entry to how low she can feel inside while smiling on the outside. With her guitar being her only solid friend throughout tracks like, “Death By Chocolate”, “Out Worn”, and “Inside Out” represent every time your cried because no guy hid on you, your friend treated you like a stranger, or, no matter what anyone said, you felt like the dumbest, ugliest person in the world. Not many artists like, Soccer Mommy, can reveal the turmoils of being a teen with such vast intelligence and sentimentality. For many, teen angst seems petulant and incoherent, but Soccer Mommy adds the clarity and understanding needed to see that, when you are young, you feel everything because you want to be everything. In some ways, the “darkness” of Soccer Mommy can be different for each listener. If you are a teen, Soccer Mommy’s Collection will feel like a hand reaching out to say “Try” or that it, too, dreams and beats itself up while “Waiting For Cars”. Yet, if you are older, Collection is a realization that growing up means handling emotions better because you let go of your deluded ideas of being “perfect” and the epitome of beauty.
Soccer Mommy – Inside Out
It never gets easy, but it does get better. With an indie vibe, Collection is a reminder of said truth, and Soccer Mommy become a fresh, innocent voice that radiates her emotions as if she is discovering them while she sings. Hence, this album shows you will never be 100%, every time comfortable with who you are as a person. You will not always see yourself as the prettiest, smartest, and kindest. Yet, as you grow older, you realize that insecurities and dreams are like waves, they only define the ocean of your being with how you swim them.
