Album Review: Sofi De La Torre Pops Into The Music Scene In “Another. Not Me. I’m Done.”
Sofi De La Torre has been garnering a lot of buzz for being a “Jackie Of All Trades”. She is involved in every aspect of her sound, from lyrics to production, and listeners are falling for her husked voice. She might as be smoke with how she evaporates her vocals in her premier mixtape Another. Not Me. I’m Done.
In nine tracks, De La Torre proclaims that she may just be breaking into the music scene, but it she is ready to define it. The seedy synths of producer Jonas Karlsson provides a neon melancholia for De La Torre to feed her nightlife expeditions/ woes. Songs such as, “Cocktails & Emotions”, “3 is the new 2”, and “$” feel like tracks caught between club life glamor and real life gloom. They sonically paint a club back-drop as if you have chosen to sit down in a corner and watch the crowd dance the night away. Yet, as the lyrics show in “Views Of You ft. Taylor Bennett” and “Nike Grey”, nostalgia and lustful longing begins to strike your heart and mind. The cruel “plays “of your ex spur as you have taken yourself away from the distraction of drinks, lights, and dancing. Yes, I know that Another. Not Me. I’m Done. is not meant to be a concept album, but it inadvertently is. Each song is rich in moody rhythms ready to lace nights with dark fantasies and lyrics that are sincere in the desire and dread of loving your ex, which explains its conceptual idea. You cannot help but feel like this record was created from the raw feeling of being emotionally abandoned and the desperate act to forget such grief in a VIP lounge. You may laugh at my idea, but once you listen to Another. Not Me. I’m Done, you will understand and appreciate such notions.
Sofi De La Torre has a blued pop voice that can bring the sweet seduction of pop/ R&B but also the gnawing realness of Hip Hop. Sometimes, you want to self-combust from the fiery ploys of your lover, “U Can’t Do Easy” and “Old You”, while other times you could sway to the tropical and heart beats of falling in love like , “D.G.I.T”. This song in particular spells, for me, Sofi De La Torre has the capacity to make a vibrant, radio hit. If such markers can be made in the beginning of her career, imagine the heights she will reach.
