Concert Review: Sofi Tukker Give Rio Vibes To NYC At Music Hall Of Willamsburg

OMG! Sofi Tukker KILLED it in Music Hall Of Williamsburg (MHOW). This duo offers DJ levels of music exhilaration with the tangible humanity of lead singers. I love DJs, and have reviewed plenty, but the thing people most miss when seeing a DJ is a performer. Despite the exhilaration and electricity of hearing the mixes and mashes of a good DJ, we all love an artist. Yet, Sofi Tucker offers both DJ music styles with lead singer attraction.

In the MHOW centerstage was a neon colored ring with lights and images of the letters to their name and tigers. There I was thinking …. hmm nice, elevated display. Yet, it was also the beating drum for keyboardist/ vocalist Tucker, who revealed his own song as lead vocalist “Bats**t Crazy”. His deep voice and nonchalance reminded of 90’s electronica dance jams, but, of course, their rhythms have modernized and fused with sunnied flares. Tucker and Sophie’s auras played well to both the crowd, and the duo’s overall ambiance of “Just Have a Freakin Good Time”. They are the EPITOME of every moment you turned around, and told some guy or woman, “Could you please enjoy yourself!”. They are all about giving into fun and calling out the haters, i.e. tracks like “Greed” which pumped up the crowd to recall high-school bullies and toss a casual mid-finger. Yet, their ripe blend of empowerment and confrontation is what electrifies their music and performance to be as similarly buoyant to that of a DJ’s mix. They combine English and Portuguese lyrics like in the infectious “Drinkee” and pulsing “Matadora” to make you feel like you are in Lollapalooza: Rio Edition. Sophie’s voice is hypnotically simple. It lathers in cool passion, which elaborates the mystical bassline and the duo’s encouraging message to own your identity in songs such as, “Baby I’m A Queen” and “Johny”.

In plain fashion, Sofi Tukker’s beats are so sick I thought Beyonce sneezed on them. (“Partition” reference/ pun) Their music/ stardom is on the rise because you cannot resist their distinct sound that plays with dark-tropical undertones. Thus, I was very happy to see that the duo are friendly and joyous in concert. Sophie’s bubbly personality and playful sways to the audience only added to the “badassery” she would exude when covering Kanye West’s Fade and sharing the stage/vocals with Betta Lemme in “Awoo”: another song with a charming hook that instantly catches ears. Moreover, Tucker’s run and dance into the crowd was the final, colorful breaking of any “wall” between Sofi Tukker and the audience. As if no one could stop thinking they are the coolest pair of Millennials ever, they had to be sweet and carry funny tales on past tour injuries and song inspiration. Thus, I highly recommend their concert because it is a guarnateed good time, and they it is always nice to support artists that are nice. For More Information On Sofi Tukker Click Here.
