EP Review: Sofi Tukker Are Dancing On The People
“When you’re dancing in the club and it’s so packed you completely lose yourself in it and don’t even know where you end and the next person begins, cuz you’re all one vibration, that’s when you’re dancing on the people (“…with the people on the people, dancing dancing on the people”). It’s a feeling of complete lack of inhibition and complete connection. It’s the feeling we get at our parties and it’s the best feeling in the world.”
I love that quote because it embodies why club culture exists. People want to feel united: one with music, energy, and those around them. Dancing On The People continues to solidify Sofi Tukker’s comfort and confidence in their meld of pop music and Brazilian music and culture. Both members lived in Brazil and fell in love with the country and Portuguese language. Since then, their sound and image has been an eternal love letter to the nation that helped them find who they were as artists: party loving, feel good vibing, Portuglish speaking stars.

From “Playa Grande” to “Fantasy,” DOTP feels like a virtual beach is being built through this record. It, honestly, feels birthed by Rio’s rhythms but they are zipping through a pixelated sky; making you want to take the streets to paint them with Instagram murals of all the people you love and laugh with. It is an exuberant image that matches Sofi Tukker’s fearlessly cool vividness. You can see the palm trees, crystalline oceans, and dancing bodies throughout tracks like, “Swing” and “Like This.” Hence, it is so perfect for any club, which they will be hitting many on their tour.

Vocally, Sophie Hawley-Weld and Tucker Halpern are a perfect match. Tucker is as weighty as a bassline and Sophie is as light as a synth. Hence, their interchanges drive the ups and downs of their melodies to show a night-out is like an emotional see-saw; filled with euphorias and sensualities you must, continuously, reach for until you believe your home is a discotheque in Heaven.
