Album Review: Duckwrth Has Got Me Feeling “Supergood”

I LOVE when a debut album is perfect. I love feeling like I have met with a new artist/ new fave and will proceed to STAN them for life. Introductions are everything and a weak or “okay” debut can mar your career, which might be why so many artists prefer using their EPs like hype-machines or testing grounds until they feel they have built themselves enough to smack the world with their debut. YES, I SAID SMACK! You have to HIT people with a sonic fist, and tell them, “Listen Up!,” which Duckwrth’s Supergood does exactly that.

The WHOLE ALBUM IS A BOP! It is a journey in sound with Duckwrth’s feelings and moods as the narrator. In essence, he makes the listener the Alice to his wonderland; where he can go from the Madhatter to the Caterpillar or Cheshire Cat. He approaches his lyrics like an iconic character, which only breathes life into the fact that his beats are visual. I can SEE the colors, shapes, and perfumes that mold a scene for the situations in “Say What You Mean,” “Weekned?,“ and “Too Bad.” Note I said “situations” rather than experiences. Most songs sings to instances in an artists life, which Duckwrth does, but he approaches them with energy of somebody driving up to the “situation” ready to confront it. Thus, he feels like the adrenaline to get what and who you want: from enemies to lovers.
DUCKWRTH – Crush

I know this is going to sound like a strange compliment, but I felt Duckwrth’s rap style was like listening to a one-man marching band. He changed his vocal annotations as if every beat/ sentiment he hit had to have a new vocal instrument. Yet, no matter what, the intention and action was to get you HYPED! This entire album feels like a hype fantasy; making you want to be the girl busting a move in the middle of the dancefloor like you are your mom in Soul Train or your family’s conga line. The result is an album that is unabashedly fun, sexy, and charming, which is Duckwrth style.
DUCKWRTH – QUICK ft. KIAN (Audio)

I have seen Duckwrth live, and he is a tenacious, bold performer. His charisma comes from his determination to draw you into his world enough for you to detach from your own. This makes him a great performer, but his ability to transition that desire and talent unto a record makes him a great entertainer. Once again, I can SEE him performing. Every verse he steams and presses with swag and every rhythm  he paints and glitters with imagination, which makse Supergood engulfing. Add on that he has a plethora of awesome features from the likes of Jean Deaux, Earthgang, Kyle Dion, Alex Mali, etc, and and this album, truly, is one of the best of 2020.
