Album Review: Suzanne Santo Paints Heartbreak “Ruby Red”

There is a Southern gothic vibe to Suzanne Santo’s debut Ruby Red that has me in love with her sound. She brings a darkness to country sound that could soundtrack a film of colonial witches casting counter spells to all those that chose to broke their hearts. Hence, douse yourself in Ruby Red, and get ready for new country-pop star.

As part of HONEYHONEY, Suzanne knows how to make music that builds an ambiance and story. Hence, tracks like “Ghost In My Bed”, “Handshake”, and “Blood On Your Knees” feel like chapter in a twisted novella on love lost. Yet, Suzanne did not lose her love from “tragedy”, Instead it was the voodoo of his words and actions that left her giving the “Best of Me” and with “The Wrong Man”. Personally, I am all for fierce, femme albums that talk about a man cheating and stealing a woman’s heart because it is too common an issue. Sure, music may approach love, and even the demise of relationships, but not too many songs say, “Love Fucked Up”, which is why I love Suzanne Santo. She brazenly goes for how horrible it is to have your feelings toyed with by a bad guy. Her love’s end is not a case of “miscommunication” or “misfortune” as much as malice. Some men truly toss “Bullets” into your self-esteem, and her darker tones and guitar melodies mix with her Southern feel will enamor the audience. You will feel like Suzanne Santo is right next toy fueling and fuming over whisky shots and fire. “DAMN THAT MAN!” you will say as Santo smokily shoots down with her vocals all the hurt and “Regrets” her ex left her with. Thus, even though the album’s chords and messages can grate and grit in a richly somber tone, there is an anthemic, FEMALE EMPOWERED aura to Ruby Red.

Dear men, DO NOT F**K WITH SUZANNE SANTO! Matter fact, do not F**K with women! It is not only wrong and boring, literally, but this album reminds you that cruelty spiritually sucks. At times, there is no need to “fluff” heartbreak. Although Suzanne Santo can be poetical in her sonic approach, she makes sure to show raw is more important than pretty because vulnerability leads to true beauty.
