Album Review: The 1975 Delve Into A Brief History Into Online Relationships

Both seriously and, at times, sarcastically, The 1975 continue to analyze modern love with with a razor edge. Their newest record, The 1975’s A Brief History Into Online Relationships is no different, and manages to highlight the depressions and euphoria of finding love through a screen. If The 1975’s new album reveals anything about Millennial, internet hook-ups, it’s that an amplified desire for love has also exposed those that just want to get physical.

If I could capture online dating in one word, it would be, “Uuuuggggghhhhhhh!” Yet, it is the most common way of dating, despite feeling draining and cold. Still, I cannot say that that is an inherent issue of online dating. There is a “ying/yang” dynamic that swirls through tracks like, “Surrounded By Heads And Bodies,” “The Man Who Married A Robot / Love Theme,” and “Be My Mistake.” Sometimes, it is not easy to tell if you want or need a serious relationship, or are just avidly wishing you could manifest a temporary lover whenever you are in the mood. Hence, the 1975’s A Brief History Into Online Relationships lyrically circles how our search for a relationship could be shrouding a deeper need to find fulfillment in yourself.
The 1975 – Sincerity Is Scary (Official Video)

With synths and snares that make you feel like you have entered a neon, rights chat-room that zips and zaps your quotes from your messenger, Healy’s voice is the ripe blend of pop sweetness and personal bitterness. From “I Always Wanna Die (Sometimes)” to “Sincerity Is Scary,” his vocals deliver gut-wrenching lyrics on addiction, fear, and loneliness as if he was on the Jools Holland show. He “primetimes” pain, of which the 1975 are known for doing. They use “images of cool” like stickers for the journal of a person decrying a false sense of identity. Thus, as in their other albums, you still get an 80’s shoulder dance out of jams like, “TOOTIMETOOTIMETOOTIME” or “Give Yourself A Try.” but you also get more introspective tracks.
The 1975 – Give Yourself A Try

From “Inside Your Mind” to “Love It If We Made It,” I realized the power of The 1975 is that they have swaggered up emotional neediness and dissatisfaction. In a world more open to discussing its desire to spiritually connect and its struggle to be mentally clear enough to do so, A Brief History Into Online Relationships questions whether love has gotten harder in this epoch or if we started aiming higher? The more we ask of ourselves to be better is also the more we question whether others are better for us. Humanity is no longer so easy to settle for love, but The 1975 question if we are ready to work harder for it.
