Album Review: Tirzah Shows “Devotion” Is Simply Surreal In Feeling
Tirzah’s Devotion is 100% unique. While many songstresses are rising to modernize R&B with a sense of electro futurism, Tirzah adds an element of surrealism. Devotion is like entering a house party in Alice and Wonderland, there is something grounded, yet eclectic and fantastical about this debut.
Devotion plays like whispers of sweet nothings in your ear. Tirzah’s voice is a balance between spoken word and singing. It is as if her speaking voice is a melody. Thus, her vocality pours into tracks such as , “Fine Again”, “Basic Need,” and “Say When,” like syrup; the sensuality of desire. Frankly, there is nothing wrong with wanting someone by your side. We all get lonely, and fiend for companionship because, I believe, it is in humanity to want to share itself. This notion honeys songs like, “Gladly,” “Affection,” and “Reach,” and make you feel for Tirzah as another fellow human being who wants to be loved.

You have to give love to receive it; the virtue is truly reciprocal. Thus, every verse builds like a brick founding a home in someone’s heart. Hence, rhythmically, Devotion is very smooth and plotted. Every beat feels precisely placed in fluidity; as if you could actually decide where the ripples in a river can go. Her ability to turn surrealism into naturalism, through the delicacy of her voice, shows that devotion is simple in magic. It fills you up even though it is so basic and steady in vastness. You simply feel how you feel, and you grow from there. Though that statement may be enveloping in meaning. when you hear those sweet baselines or steamed kick-drums in tracks like, “Do You Know” and “Go Now,” you will know exactly what it means.

There are those that believe love is a game as if it trying to trick or dupe you, but Devotion shows that it is you trying to find the tricks to outwit love or, at least, make it mold to what you want from it. Thus, follow Tirzah in this excellent debut to gain a new, favorite artist and companion in this “love game”. For More Information On Tirzah and To Buy Devotion on August 10 Click Here.
