Album Review: Chloe X Halle Take Me To An Ungodly Hour! YAS!

I have BEEN SAYING THIS! The 90’s are going to return people. I FULLY expect sounds and styles that bring us back to the era of Aaliyah and the swag of the Fresh Prince. Enter Chloe X Halle’s Ungodly Hour: filled with a sense of futurism matched with the sultriness and smoothness of 90’s R&B. Janet Jackson would BOP to this record.

I was SUPERBLY impressed by this sophomoric record. We have all heard of the “Sophomore Slump” and the fear that comes with having a great debut and then realizing you need to follow it up. Welp! Chloe X Halle is BLEW IT UP! These ladies have SERVED the world, and we can’t help but it eat up. The album is absolutely perfect, and if it does not get Grammy nods, then the institution will continue proving it does not have its ear to the ground. It is rare that an artist/ duo matches a sense of innovation and presence quite like this sister act does in Ungodly Hour.

Vocally, Chloe X Halle are so precise; pacing their voices and harmonies like a strategy of war they plan to win. The dynamic fuels the album’s atmosphere of sensuality, strength, and slight vindictiveness. This is the record you play when you have either been crossed by your man or are starting to suspect a potential crossing. Yet, make no mistake. In a world where a lover can betray your heart, revenge can be as simple as calling that ISH OUT! Thus, in using 90’s R&B as influence, Chloe X Halle remind us how vital the era was in bringing a mass of female artists willing to fall in love or burn the man who failed her.

Ungodly Hour is dreamy, but in an entirely different sense. It is an aesthetic. Listening to the record goes beyond being a mood as much as a taste. You envision the fashion, settings, and played roles of lovers in each track while Chloe X Halle prove they will be narrating the charts. Buy Ungodly Hour Here.
