Album Review: Wavves “You’re Welcome” Is Music For Acceptance
Sometimes, you need a quick-fix of energy. Just a little shot of adrenaline to pick up your soul, and keep the body moving. Wavves newest album, You’re Welcome, is the epitome of downing a red-bull and going for a run to no specific destination; you just want to GO!
Instrumentally, surf-punk Wavves has epitomized the connection between the electric guitar and a person’s nervous system. Songs like, “Daisy” and “Animal” can spark your nerves and neurons into a vapid flux that leaves you wanting to revolt against parental, social, or general rules. Overall, there seems to be a sugar-pop rebellion brewing throughout You’re Welcome with lyrics and an overarching aura of youthful mischief like, a bunch of 1950’s gents and gals deciding to sneak out from their homes and go all Reefer Madness. Although its may sound peculiar, there is a note of classic pop-rock undercutting “Million Enemies” and “Come To The Valley”, yet it not just about sound as much as style/ message. Wavves centered You’re Welcome, which is usually a term of reciprocated gratitude, around the notion of acceptance. Nearly every song is about feeling out of place and being invited by Wavves to join and follow them through “Dreams Of Grandeur”, “Exerscize” and being “Stupid In Love”. With drums that could summon a prom battalion and keys that sparkle like city-lights, the arrangements of You’re Welcome are exactly that…. welcoming. Yet, what would an album review, at least mine, be without my admiration for a vocalist, i.e. Nathan Williams.
There is fury and friendliness to Nathan Williams’ voice that makes him appear like a greaser throwing pebbles at glass houses, and inviting you to join in. As Wavves furious flurries of keys, chords, and drumbeats prowl behind Williams, his vocal drawl becomes listeners’ emotional drive. Why not get in the car, speed it to 88, and have an adventure? It is in that musical notion You’r Welcome becomes a fun, pure energy boost. For More Information On Wavves And To Buy You’re Welcome On May 19 Click Here.
