Album Review: Yumi Zouma’s EP III Is A Groovy Addition
Yumi Zouma’s EP III comes just off the edge of summer and feels like a blue crush. It turns love “blues” into a royal navy that you want wrap yourself in for the fall. Such a dynamic, makes EP III a groovy step forward for the a band consistently growing in sound.
Seeing them live, you can tell Yumi Zouma are exceptional musicians that understand music is like a boardwalk built over your heart’s ocean; you walk over it trusting that it will keep you above the ocean so that you can see its marvel and now drown in it. Yumi Zouma approach their arrangements like they are building a boardwalk, and in “Crush (It’s Late, Just Stay)” and “Powder Blue / Cascine Park” you are so happy to stroll over life’s blue waves and see how nature works safely beneath you. While I love a good, emotive record, Yumi Zouma’s Christie Simpson vocals are unflinching and unfazed. She delivers verses for you to consume as quips more than quivering emotions.
EP III feels like a quick burst of chic, in part, because it is steady and atmospherically cool. t is a neatly, trended blanket of sound that you can fit easily into your day because it feels settled in feelings, which I appreciate. There are so many ways to approach music and give it purpose, but not many artists go for the average moments such as, cleaning your room, doing your work, or simply laying on the couch trying to feel motivated. It might seem trite for an artist to aim for those moments and inadvertent when they do. Yet, life is not always a club event; we need music to fuel every aspect of it and tracks like,“Looking Over Shoulders” and “In Camera” is fresh enough to do it.
