Album Review: Yungblud Shows You The Real “21st Century Liability”

Is Yungblud rock? Is he pop? Is he just an insane kid figuring out how to not self-combust in a combusting world? I think he is the latter. In 21st Century Liability, he becomes a succinct, sarcastic, and serious look into how humanity defines “wild.”

I truly believe the most rebellious thing to be is peaceful, and the wildest thing to do is be yourself; Yungblud seems to think the same. From “Anarchist” to “Medication,” Yungblud approaches his verses kind of like his album cover; bound by a spiritual straight-jacket. He reminds me of the 90’s Blink 182 days, when guys would drool their verses as if they were globs of emotions being held in their mouth. That “emo-element” definitely plays throughout the album as Yungblud confronts what he cannot stand about himself and society and how they interplay in his attempt to feel okay with life.

Now more than ever, people are undergoing or confronting depression because they feel helpless to the growing social unrest and moral decay like, “Machine Gun (Fk the NRA)”, “Psychotic Kids,” and “Die For The Hype.” Lyrically, Yungblud challenges how we are all killing ourselves to be famous and seen in a world that we do not want to look at; an idea that even Drake’s Scorpion toys with. From “Eulogy” to “California”, Yungblud sees the youth is crying because they have to fit into the world they, themselves, want to reject.

Sonically, 21st Century Liability sounds like rock n’ roll was put into a juvenile asylum, which will appeal to listeners. It is concerted chaos seeking clarity, which is exactly what Yungblood aimed for, especially lyrically. This record strings in human discontent for the airwaves, but does it in a way that feels quietly relatable. No one is going to say, out loud, how much they are devastated by this world, but the music pick, like Yungblood’s, can do it for you.
