Concert Review: Alec Benjamin Is Your Cousin At Knitting Factory
Entering Alec Benjamin’s concert was an instant joy. It is always a rare, beautiful gem to see people so eager to love and display it to someone. That “someone” being Alec Benjamin. The words “cute,” “adorable,” and “so sweet” were consistently repeated throughout the night at Knitting Factory. Yet, the word that most stood out to me was “cousin.”
“Alec, can I be your cousin?” said one fan. Alec blushed, laughed, and explained that his cousins are pretty amazing. He was beyond genuine; he was pure, and it made people feel like they were watching their family member perform. In essence, he was “that cousin” everybody in the family compares their children’s success to like, “You heard Alec got signed to Atlantic Record?!” People loved how much he oozed kindness, and his show stood out as one with no walls. The night was as much a conversation between an artist and his fans as it was a concert. Yet, his ability to enrapture a crowd with his casualness and cool nobility was impactful. He showed that, perhaps, the greatest making of a star is friendliness.

From the beginning of the show, it became Total Request Live. Even he was surprised to see how much his fans knew about him, and wanted songs that were released the day prior in his new, excellent mixtape, Narrated For You. They either had amazing memories or practiced all night to sing back to him his words, but the dynamic brought out the beauty to his acoustic songs such as, “1994,” “Boy In The Bubble,” and “Now She’s Getting Married.” After all, hearing an audience of people sing in unison and emotiveness is what going to a concert is all about. From his cover of Eminem’s “Stan” to “I Built Friend,” Alec’s voice and demeanor emanated the thoughts of a good heart.

If someone had told me he was, literally, sliced from the bread of life, I would say, “Yeah, I see it!”There was an undeniable softness to both his voice and spirit that made his verses feel richly thoughtful and young. From wanting to show your sibling you will always be there for her to renaming your tour photographer, Alec speaks and sings with his heart and it is big enough to say a lot. Yet, more importantly, his music describes the simple hardships of being nice. It is not easy to care about others, but his concert is for those that are willing to take up the challenge.
