Artist Close-Up: Carla Geneve Is A Modern Juliet

What I love about Shakespeare is that he is simultaneously romantic and terrifying. When you think of his greatest work, Romeo and Juliet, two 15 year old kids, raised in their own prospective, violent gangs, fall in love and kill themselves within 5 days. THIS BOOK is the titular example of English Literature and used in introductory classes across 8th grades.  Yet, from Disney to Jane Austen, Love is the most beautiful thing we are taught so wrongly about, and Carla Geneve is trying to gently unpack the dream vs. the reality.

In animation, I’d love to be Pocahontas….in real life…..NOT AT ALL. (Read up on her tragedy!) Tracks, like “Juliet,” “Things Change,” and “I Hate You (For Making Me Not Want To Leave The City)” have Carla singing to how love pushed her away from who she was and left her seeking who she needs to be. I always say, “You are never the same after a relationship.” Break-ups seem to push people to find a new identity, and Carla gets real about that. From “Empty Stomach” to “Yesterday’s Clothes,” she paints the physical pictures of feeling emotionally lost. For awhile, you are messy, messed up, and completely willing to stay that way.

Sonically, Carla makes her guitar melodies sound like a slow-burning drawl. There is a simplicity to her arrangements and vocals that make her feel vast. She paces and steps her verses over the guitar as if she is in her bedroom, walking around, and thinking about how she has spent her days consistently “the same.” Who knows what it takes to change for the better from everything that has changed for the worst, but Carla Geneve feels like a good artist to play when you are figuring it out.
