Album Review: Canon Blue Creativity Is Born In Isolation In “Lasso Yo”
Conceived during increasingly long periods of isolation caused by increasingly intense bouts of anxiety and depression, Canon Blue’s Lasso Yo weaves those difficult personal struggles into a lyrically earnest and musically rich collection of songs. Beneath layered synths packed together to exemplify Canon Blue’s own feelings of compression, Lasso Yo is the exploration of how we sound good to hold together that we feel bad.
The irony of Lasso Yo is that it sonically upbeat and even anthemic for being one made in pure challenge and catharsis. Tracks like “Onyx”, “Carry My Weight”, and “Back In Town” sound bigger for being based on a feeling such smallness. Canon Blue, real name Daniel James, approaches his lyrics and even his vocals like a man at a loss; like a child returning home in disappointment. Although he is certainly not as petulant, I make this reference because James seems as if his hurt stems from a loss of innocence or naivety. While we always associate loss of innocence as a childhood ordeal, I believe it is a process that might not truly end, and, in retrospect, do we want it to? From bad relationships to bad self-images, Canon Blue is chipping at his soul, but arranging his music to veil over his peeled layers like in, “Dedicate” and “Tame Birds”. Chords and keys sound either brighter or stabler giving each song a foundational feel to contrast the fact that Daniel James is seeking that very thing: a foundation.
Lasso Yo achieves a kind of electro -weightlessness in sonics style that makes it a curious dichotomy. You are listening to Daniel James, a Nashville native, croon tracks with hypnotizing sentimentality that makes him sound romantic when he is actually confrontation. Between James’ fear of his past, present, and the new shape it gives his future, Lasso Yo is transcendent and relatable record for those that know, sometimes, no matter how great you are, you do not feel it.
