Concert Review: Alexander 23 Sings To The “Sad” Twenty-Something

There is an idea that growing up too fast signifies young kids drinking, smoking, or dating by 13, but that is not growing up too fast as much as going crazy. For me, growing up too fast is meeting emotional milestones that should be saved for when your older. Nowadays, kids have to worry about their public image by age 8 and are starting social media campaigns upon birth. Alexander 23 understands how exposed young generations feel, and puts such vulnerable sentiments into lyrical crossroads.

If teenagers are actually living like the teens in Riverdale then no wonder depression and anxiety is sky-rocketing. They are literally building adult relationships/situations that not even adults know how to do. With this in mind, Alexander 23’s music felt like a sonic accompaniment for the young person that feels old; the one that questions if 23 is a “burnt out” age. Similar to Alec Benjamin, he stood front and center to his crowd; acknowledging and speaking to them as if he was not there to perform as much as chat. The dynamic was welcomed and warmed by the young audience because if there is one thing I know about Generations Z’ers is that they believe in equal status.

Dirty AF1s [Lyric Video]

If for old timers the question was, “You think you’re better than me?” then for newer generations the question is, “Am I better than myself?” The latter Q prompted songs such as, “Sad” and “Dirty AF1’s.” Vocally, Alexander 23 has a very conversational tone; annotating his notes as if telling a story was the same as making melody. Thus, when he actually spoke about what inspired his songs, an ebb and flow was made. It was as if story-time never ended and music always flowed. It was a sweet effect from a guy that truly wants to connect with his crowd on a lighter note. Though he may sing to feeling despondent or heartbroken, he really wants you to feel better.
