Concert Review: Amy Shark Is Loved By New Yorkers At Bowery Ballroom
On my way to Amy Shark’s concert, I was on the train trying to comfort a randomly crying young woman. Trapped in a job she does not like with a boss who might “like” her too much, she tussled between publicly crumbling into a mid-train, life crisis and trying to make sure she saw her stop in between tears. She was a raw blend of the daily resilience we carry in getting through days despite a gnawing fear that there are no better ones to come. Amy Shark is that fear placed into indie-pop glory.
Amy Shark – Drive You Mad
“I want to emotionally, mentally, and physically f**k you up, and if I do not succeed, by the end of the night, I have failed,” Amy Shark said with a wry smile. The always witty songstress was headlining Bowery Ballroom, and openly wondering why she was still in her native Australia, when she loved New York so much and it loved her right back. Yet, In recapping my “train incident”, New York loves Amy Shark because she makes music for the twenty-something NYC’er that is biting her nails, trying to hide her tears in a subway ride, and fidgeting with her dreams as if it was spinner in between her fingers. Now, with a debut album out and an unwavering fan-base, she has realized that there are so many people as “f**ked up” as her.
Amy Shark – Weekends
Amy Shark is undeniably the friend you go to pubs with; she dances, laughs at herself, and pushes you to do the same. She has fully grown as a singer, who smartly displays her range like an actress; tethering her lyrics to the physicality of emotion. Moreover, her chorded melodies are as effervescent as her swag. “Drive You Mad”, “Middle of The Night”, “Worst Girl”, and “You Think I Think You Sound Like God” showed how controlled Shark has her vocality for being a woman singing to feeling out of control. She has lyrically honed the anxiety of thinking everything in life has meaning only to discover that a lot of time it does not.
Amy Shark – ADORE [Official Music Video]
From “Spits On Girls” to “Weekends”, sometimes, there is no meaning to why others hurt you or why you hurt yourself, and, other times, there are no reasons for the decisions you make to love and laugh. Sometimes, things just happen, and Shark’s melodies are their to decipher how you feel about that. For More Information on Amy Shark Click Here.
