Concert Review: Aquilo Show What Is Is To Be Human And In Love At MHOW
Aquilo gave me CHILLS at MHOW to point of literal tears. The starry, British duo of Ben Fletcher and
Tom Higham have created a sound that is fearless in its beauty. This is not a music that is trying to sound torn beyond its lyrics on toxic love. As human beings, we really do try to be our best for a relationship, and Aquilo gave their best in showing how our efforts can fail.

Heavenly, dreamy, and whimsical are terms used to describe Aquilo’s sound, and I could not agree more! Both rousing falsettos aim for highness in vocality and emotionality by throwing themselves into songs such as, “Thin”, “Waiting”, and “Blindside” which were preceded by tales of how friends and exes inspired their most recent album, Silhouettes. As they laughed and thanked the crowd, several times, for their attendance, their soft-synth sound draped the room like a music gated and made me want their albums, immediately. Not only have they arranged every key to be a wreath of flowery inclusion and gorgeous hypnosis, but they make sure to convey their tracks. “Sorry”, “Human”, and “I Gave It All” had me tearing up with how Ben and Tom played their hearts out through every glance and clutched hand. There was not one moment when Ben did not cradle the mic as if he were getting his heart broken in live time, and was singing into the mic everything he wish he could have done to prevent it. Meanwhile, Tom closed his eyes, hunched over his keys, and cried high notes that almost summoned the sun in brightness. Again, Aquilo is a beautiful act to see, and one to enjoy with beers, friends, and a long, past experience of a broken heart.

I am always fascinated to see how the prettiness and ugliness of love clash. It is in their focus of that theme, and their decided, self-aware lyricism that Aquilo gather hints of soul into their indie-pop sound. You cannot approach love with such a fractured delicacy and not be equated with a certain level of soul. Thus, for music that leaves you vulnerable but intoxicated with fantasy, I suggest you Click Here and check out Aquilo!
