Concert Review: The Babe Rainbow Run Carefree At Baby’s All Right

The Babe Rainbow are weird, and, in essence, that is why you love them. To go to their show is to enter a tepee and be offered a selection of shrooms, peyote, and herbs to transcend the common sphere, i.e. earth. After all, it is not like earth has been a fun batch of gum-drops and skittles. Thus, The Babe Rainbow were pure, psychedelic escapism at Baby’s All Right, and people were living for it.
The Babe Rainbow (AUS) – Peace Blossom Boogy

Beneath smoke and dimmed lighting, The Babe Rainbow sang the songs from their self-titled debut with such a carefree demeanor, I wondered if they knew they were in a concert or in this universe. Now, I do not say this facetiously. On the contrary, I say this out of fascination because they danced and sang for themselves. Every move, note, and invited person they drew from the crowd onto the stage was done because they felt like it. There was no attempt to impress or force upon the crowd an image or mood of “happy psychedelia”. Instead, they treated everyone like they had entered their camp at the “music festival”, and could have any food, wisdom, or jam-session they pleased. The leader of this camp was, of course, Jack, whose “head to toe” outfit of floral decals had me enamored. He jolted, jazzed, and prayed into motions like he was a shaman doing an impromptu yoga lesson. He moved like he had caught a psychedelic spirit, and the girls loved it. As he passed around neon-lit tambourines and riffed over bongos, you could tell he was living for this moment beyond the fans and even the fodder of performing. In essence, The Babe Rainbow literally only care about playing music, which is why the room was packed with people; that is all we want to hear.
The Babe Rainbow (AUS) – Johny Says Stay Cool

Admittedly, there were some audio problems throughout the set that made the vocals a little too low to hear at some points. Yet, Jack’s voice only melted further into the bombastic 60’s synth-psych that was behind him, and allowed his voice to feel like another welcomed instrumental. All in all, the night felt like a could music session amongst friends, eccentrics, and intellectuals by the bonfire. For a brief moment, this Aussie band reminded a batch of Americans not to worry…. music heals all. For More Information On The Babe Rainbow Click Here.
