Concert Review: Antonia Bennett Show The Magic Of Love At The Cafe Carlyle

Antonia Bennett is doing a sweet, jazz run at The Cafe Carlyle. The New Yorker and daughter of Tony Bennett knows very well the control music has over The City. We are a town known for our lights and sounds, and with an exceptional band behind her Antonia showed that a clean range plays well with any backdrop.

Antonia’ voice is like a crisp apple; deliciously simple and fulfilling. From “Teach Me Tonight” to “Nice Work If You Can Get It”, Bennett sang songs that were meant for the dreaminess of love, and came from legends like Ella Fitzgerald and Rosemary Clooney, of which she spoke so kindly in remembrance. Having a famous dad, she was surrounded by greats that understood how to perform and use their talent to its most powerful potential. Antonia is so clean in pitch and tone she is practically transparent or even translucent. Her voice shimmers with a tenderness mothers save for lullabies, and being a new mom might be her inspiration. There is lulling quality to her vocals that brings out the coy desire of wanting to be held and loved by someone as in “Embraceable You” and “I Can’t Give You Anything But Love”. Thus, the entire night was seemingly dedicated to the vulnerability of love as a virtue that makes you stand bare before someone to declare, “I am with you completely. Will you be with me?”. Therefore, there was an unabashed romanticism to the night that culminated with songs such as “Always On My Mind”, “Our Love Is Here To Stay”, and “Everytime We Say Goodbye”.

Antonia’s delicate vocals add that love is truly grand when corresponded. As she smiled and looked directly into the audience, she brought back the “old world” goal to connect to the crowd with, again, simplicity. A nice smile or a kind eye goes a far way, and when the night is all about reaching out to someone in hopes they receive you with a generous heart, such as sweet demeanor turned The Cafe Carlyle into a welcoming lounge of glamor.
