Concert Review: Megan Hilty Is A Vocal Dream At Cafe Carlyle

This intimate cafe was the perfect setting to enjoy the voice and witty musings of Megan Hilty. The Broadway Blonde captured hearts in the NBC show Smash and now is Tony nominated for her role in Noises Off.  Her musical success is no surprise when you witness the power of her presence.

She entered coolly from the back of the café and lightened hearts with witty banter. She is really funny, which makes her songs have an element of surprise. One minute she is laughing and making jokes about her husband/guitarist, Brian Gallagher, and then she proceeds to sing a heart-wrenching version of “Tenderly,” written by Walter Gross. It is a mental trip to associate her kind, warm smile with her ability to make you cry from beauty. Her rendition of songs like, “Autumn Leaves/When October Goes,” written by Barry Manilow, and “I Wish You Love,” written by Albert A. Beach, were stunningly somber. Like the true professional songstress she is, there is not one note sung without sentiment, which makes her sadder songs feel so powerful. You are in awe at seeing how quickly she can place herself in an emotional moment for her song and then return to crack a joke. The contrast is mesmerizing.

It is always great to discover new things about an artist, and if you to see Hilty at Café Carlyle, you will learn of her love for Rosemary Clooney. Every singer has their icon; the one that taught them lessons on how to sing and how to feel through their songs. When Hilty discusses Clooney, she does so with a humble respect and love you hold for your icon. It is clear that she admired both the singer and person Clooney was. Throughout the show she speaks about Clooney’s life, even reading excerpts from her auto-biography. Yet, it’s her adulation for Clooney’s vulnerability and openness to love that leaves you open to Hilty. As she sings Clooney’s hits like “Sway” or “Come Rain or Shine,” she cannot help but be the light she feels. She sings with her heart, and it leaves her audience elated.

Megan Hilty at Café Carlyle is a celebration of love for both Rosemary Clooney and Hilty’s personal life. When she reminisces on her daughter and banters with her husband, it makes you feel like life can be sweet. It is simply nice and humbling. She is so in love with life that it could move you to feel grateful for yours. Add on that she can belt so fiercely, and the show is solidified as fantastic. Thus, I would highly recommend Hilty’s show. She is the perfect songstress and Carlyle is the perfect setting for a memorable night. It’s sophisticated feel and her luxurious voice will certainly make your day feel special. In addition, you can take away the day to your home by buying her new album Megan Hilty: Live at The Cafe Carlyle. Enjoy!
