Concert Review: Arctic Monkeys “IDGAF” At Forest Hill Stadium

There I was between a guy screaming, “F**K IT!” and a woman singing every lyric of the Arctic Monkeys’ songs as if she were reciting them to her boss before she quits.  Both were filled with such a passion for Arctic Monkeys’ music, you would think their albums were their sacred texts. Yet, at Forest Hills Stadium, Arctic Monkeys spoke to the working class frustrations of being better than what you get.

I never thought of Arctic Monkeys as a “working class” band until I interviewed Yungblud, and he discussed their important, social influence on him. With that mind-frame, I looked around to see a bunch of excited people coming from work and eager to surpass the over-packed lines to get in. For one young man, to miss a moment of the Arctic Monkeys’ show was to miss an instance of the best memory in his life. Yet, he was not wrong to believe such a thing. The Arctic Monkeys give a show that appeals to everyone’s inner badass; a version of us that dreams of telling every sing “nay-sayer” in our life to go screw themselves. Frankly, it is hard not feel invigorated when Alex Turner is singing.

Alex Turner ignited within spectators an emotionality and a permission to defend themselves. Nearly every Arctic Monkeys’ song spoke to either letting go of yourself or letting go of someone else. You may not see the clash, but, sometimes, pleasing another might call for our unhappiness, and Alex Turner is NOT for such an exchange. He approaches the stage with a cool, wry “Oh, you again?” attitude. He has conquered the stage so many times, he appears like a king gliding around his room with his regal robe. He sways and swags his body like a modern Elvis; giving his entire soul to songs as if music was his God. In addition, Turner has a natural drawl to his voice that allows him to slip into verses as if he is guzzling them down like a beer, and lets his notes froth and gush with grained sentiments that all can relate to.

From one of the best Strokes cover, Is This It?, to a general scope of their greatest hits and newest singles, Arctic Monkeys was a show that proved why people follow bands. I knew I was witnessing something special when every song voluntarily erupted peoples’ cheers, “I love this song!” echoes, or a mass of cellphones swaying like lighters in the air. Frankly, I could see them a thousand times more just to experience what it is to have music pull at my heart and remind me I still had it. Maybe, that is why some call Arctic Monkeys the “working class” band; we all need artists that say you do not deserve the worst in life, which is why you should fight back with your best.
