Concert Review: Babygirl Is Confetti Chaos In NYC
Babygirl arises in a time where many young artists are not simply taking up multiple genres; they are taking up multiple personalities. In a day and age, where being a singer means being a brand/ online movement, Babygirl thrives on both being a commentator on such expectations while also surpassing them; proving that the best way to conquer what the world desires is by showing it its own madness.
Just on name, Babygirl feels splashily approachable. We all know a “babygirl;” the sweet, colorful chic that you want to cuddle and protect. Yet, it is that very concept that they warps into simultaneously confetti and chaotic melodies. From “Million Dollar Bed” to “Seth And Summer Forever,”they played on the idea that you don’t have to be what the world wants of you when they world has consistently proven it has no idea what it wants. Thus, her songs appeared like gentle, middle fingers to conformity and colorful celebrations for those that broke through The Matrix.
As Babygirl performed, I kind of felt like I was watching Neo in a Juicy Couture track-suit. IMAGINE! She was strangely benevolent and flashy while also being philosophical and gutting. Her ability to express the sincere quest for personal independence under a demeanor of casualness and fun tracks gained her a BUNCH of new fans at Jeremy Zucker’s show and proved Babygirl is a must-addition to any Spotify playlist.
