Concert Review: Banners Wave At Rough Trade

I had to do it! I had to make a cheesy pun on Banners name, but I am not off, considering, how many people were rocking his merch. As I looked into the crowd, I noticed quite a few people buying and wearing their shirt, Be Some One, as if it was a flag representing a nation of honor. Of course, to you, the reader, this is just another Instagram caption. I might as well become an influencer model and post a selfie with the caption: People are people. Yet, at Rough Trade, Banners managed to bring the depth of this statement.

BANNERS – Someone To You (Official Video)

From “Someone To You” to “No One Knows Us,” most of his songs felt intimately anthemic. A celebration for anybody who found their “person” or understood that that should be a life goal. Everyone should, at least once, share a laugh and love with someone else. For Banners, this is what gives value to a life, and the message was stunning. It was a bare set, except for amazing lighting, particularly big, booming headlights behind him. The effect was a if truck was coming for you; warning you to step aside, look at the road before you, and decide where you can, how, or should you drive it. It was unbelievably emotional and needed.

BANNERS – Got It In You (Acoustic)

Banners creates the music you need. He makes you feel like the guy racing to the airport to stop the love of his life from entering her flight, and…. he actually does it. HAPPILY EVER AFTER! You may smile and feel that such an image is small or generic. Yet, I ask you, “When was the last time you felt like you won? Like a chapter beautifully closed in your life?” Hence, my assessment that his music feel necessary. We all need an instance of euphoria; a moment that goes beyond fine to feel splendid. Luckily, Banners voice does exactly that.

He is such a cool, chilly guy, which makes how his voice leaps emotional octaves fascinating. On one hand, he is the guy that smiles at you and stirs a casual convo. On the other, he is this guru of sorts; using his raw, rich vocality to show that even calmest head will feel wrecked by love. It is not easy to convey the beauty of connection nor should it be. Part of what excites and frustrates me about humanity is that I can’t always describe it, but Banners’s song were some of the closest I felt to describing its beauty.
