Concert Review: Pearla Glistens At Rough Trade

Sometimes, I look at the world, and feel like it is moving without me. Yes, technically, it is, but do you ever look at life and feel like it is this thing that happens for everyone but you? It is this force sweeping around you but not quite within you. Instead, you watch it: forever questioning whether you could embody it…… LIFE! At Rough Trade, Pearla felt like a spokesperson for all the people that really wanted to feel better about not simply feeling “off” about life as much as “out” of it.

Pearla is, definitely, one of those quiet night/ chill with people shows. She is smart and dryly witted, which explains songs such as, “Forgive Yourself” and tracks from her upcoming EP, Quilting & Other Activities. From “Daydream” to “Quilting,”  I kept on thinking of how smart people suffer more in this world (lol!). Fools have really been having a powerful prime, especially since 2016, It sucks to be aware of this, especially if you are a smart person burdened with the weight of a big heart. To you, life is filled with resolutions no one ever chooses, particularly the ones you love.

Pearla – Forgive Yourself (Welcome Campers)

The sweetness of Pearla is that she reflects the times when we feel the people we love can be better about or more protective with our love. Ugh! If I counted the many times I needed a love or partner to be “more,” but then they were not, I could qualify as a mathematician. It would be numbers on numbers (lol!). Yet, just because someone may not always love you how you want, does not mean they are not giving you the love you need. The beauty of Pearla’s voice is that it is rooted in necessary love. Her verses feel poetic in how they describe illusions and disillusionments.

Pearla delivers feelings like tossed tarot cards, and you, without being psychic, oddly know what every card means. You look at her descriptions and see anxiety, hope, confusion, and dreams are headed your way. This dynamic made her show feel effervescent like, an hour you could easily plug into your day.
