Concert Review: Becca Stevens Has Her Birthday At The Cutting Room

Wearing a gold, glittery dress, Becca Stevens was shiny as her personality. New York is an epicenter for music. Flocks of artists come to feel the grit of sound; as if beneath are concrete streets were not subways but rhythm lines. Hence, at her birthday show in The Cutting Room, Becca Stevens proved music comes from the ground up; it is born within you and grows into many songs.

Blessed with vocals that hit the air like feathers on a windy day, Becca’s voice felt like it could float anywhere. “Regina” and “Be Still” were amongst the many tracks that came to prove Becca has always been self-explorative. While some people turn inward through time, there are certain hearts that were always such a way; as if there was never moment they did not see how you work within yourself moves how you work with others. Thus, humility was at the core of Becca’s warmth and songwriting; creating narrative tracks that blended folk and jazz and introduced us to the lives of people learning how to live.

I always point out bright personalities because it matters. Sometimes, we need a good person to make us feel better and laugh, and, at times, our friends are not accessible or who we want to turn to. Enter Becca Stevens, who with her band and guests like Catey Esler, sang everything from Irish myths to her vast discography. For a woman that sings to softening towards life, she sure goes hard for gun. Yet, that might be the point; soften your heart to harden the laughter.

By the end of Becca’s show, something really special happened. She was not just an artist people loved but felt like a friend people admired. The transition was smooth, thoughtful, and subtle. Moreover, it was perfect because, as I always say, concerts are the heart of today’s music scene. Whether to see an artist you are obsessed with or to catch a work-break, concerts are a life-line, and Becca Stevens has a way of singing to and representing life as something easier to live than assumed.
