Concert Review: BENEE Is The Keanu Reeves of Pop

BENEE is going to be MASSIVE because she has something that should never be undermined: personality. While the Billie Eilish comparisons will occur, because they are both 16 and making good music, they do have something in common: both are incredibly interpersonal. They use their show to not only present their music but their personalities, particularly, to generation Z’ers whom are rising to be the smartest, most compassionate, and most exposed generation.

For kids born in the era of knowledge, love and fear seem to do an early waltz into your life; something BENEE approached with synths and humor at Mercury Lounge. She, literally, sang a song called “Monster” about her fear that someone would kidnap her but instead they offered her blueberries as her house caught fire. I can’t even this stuff, but that is the charm of BENEE. She can’t be invented; she is too natural. The weird noises she made into the mic, her discussion on dream meanings and terrifying spiders, or the million faces she makes during a song; all those qualities were apart of a young woman that you felt would be the best person to go to a theme park with!

Yes that was a quirky analogy, but it was apt. BENEE is that friend you share inside jokes with and happily laugh into misadventures, which she did with the audience. While the crowd ranged in age, by the end of it, we felt like kids. Tracks like, “Glitter,” “Snake Charmer,” and “Want Me Back” were simple, fun, and thoughtful, all at once. They were not as much about figuring life, love, and yourself as much as experiencing all three, which feels like something BENEE does: nothing to figure, just enjoy! She truly is the Keanu Reeves of Pop: that chill and charming. Moreover, her voice flows like caramel through tracks; drizzling with sweetness but never overpowering the creamy rhythms of her music.
