Concert Review: Billy Raffoul Goes Acoustic At Bowery

It is a known fact that I love Billy Raffoul’s voice. It is so smoky it might as well be served at a BBQ joint. I could just imagine it being cooked right next to the brisket and ribs with emotionality as a sauce. At Bowery Ballroom, he felt like the headliner, with ladies gasping and swooning as if he was a live-action Tinder profile and they were all swiping right. With the girl behind me literally saying he makes her feel like a “schoolgirl,” I realized that pure talent does make you feel juvenile.

Of course, I know she did not mean a literal “schoolgirl,” although her eyes gazed at Billy with a love that weighed heavier then a million backpacks stuffed with math textbooks. Yet, her crush on Billy was not simply because of his looks or amazing hair. It was because real talent makes you feel childlike in its presence. I mentioned it in my NOTD and Gallant reviews. When you are really happy or superbly impressed with someone, your words and feelings feel too simple to convey your depth. I could say, “Yes, Billy Raffoul can sing or rather SANG,” but even that feels cheap.

I never get tired of seeing Billy Raffoul’s shows, which shows his power as an artist. Some acts are really a “one and done;” exiting their show as if a life chapter has closed and now you can just stay listening to their records like a scrapbook of memories. Yet, Raffoul’s voice is not only rich in sound, it is also in style. From “1975” to “You Be Love,” he has a way of making love feel present; as if it in the back of the room ordering a Pacifico and waiting for its date to show. This not an easy feat. He humanizes Love with a balance of individualism and universalism. We all have been loved and loving, but something about this massively common feeling makes you feel like you are the only one having this experience.

If there are two feelings that, strangely, make you feel alone, it is love and pain. When I am in love or I am sad, I always feel like these feelings solely mine because, in some ways, they are. Only you can feel your hurt and your love, of which Billy’s voice released that truth with tracks readily made for radio sing-alongs. I honestly think Raffoul was born to soundtrack every major rom-com break-up and/or romantic scene; proving that a good voice can balance multiple feelings at once.
