Concert Review: Birch Unleashes Femme One On Union Pool
In Birch’s latest release, femme.one, women’s empowerment was central. A proud feminist, she discussed to her Union Pool crowd how the recent years have inspired her even more to take up for her womanhood. Obviously, the crowd cheered, but they also absorbed her nuanced take on what really perturbs about prejudice.
For any member of an oppressed community, prejudice and discrimination is not simply cruel…… it is annoying. It is a hateful nuisance that pops at any time and all the time like, having an ingrown nail in your spirit. #gross Yet, such an analogy is befitting when talking about sexism because women will face multiple men in differing occasions that will make them feel less than, either physically or mentally, for being a woman. To Birch, difference does not mean distance; I can do the same as you but differently. Still, in a world, where the worst have justified their malice to hinder the best, prejudice is not about whether someone genuinely believes another is less as much as how he or she is emotionally incapable of treating others better.
Tracks like, “Spelling Lessons,” “Bury It,” and “Labor Fruit” have Birch confronting those that cannot seem to grow better and are foolish enough to think that the world/ women will get worse to please them. It is a fact that misery loves company, and horrible men should be terrified of a world that respects, equalizes, empowers, and powers women into leadership roles because they will get no dates. (lol!) From “Matter” to “Find Me,” Birch’s voice dropped like feathers of truth. Vocally, her voice feels inviting and innocent, which is why her enlightening lyrics strike you. It is enthralling to see the way she approaches notes as if even painful truths bring peace. Thus, her soothing vocals and smiling story-telling won over the crowd.
I really like Birch, and I am excited to see her career soar. She creates pop that moods and moves wit the search of every woman to find acceptance and resistance to her oppressions. While we need to consistently be strong and fight against those that try to make us second because of our gender, we also need to leave room for those willing to love us like the number one’s we are.
