Concert Review: BRIC! Celebrate Brooklyn Observes The Art of Sound

I am a sucker for a violin. I, literally, write that truth every time I see a violin on stage. For me, it is the most beautiful instrument; adding elegance to emotion. A verse can be about a gutting trauma or a stunningly euphoric love, but a stringed arrangement amplifies the power of its words. Thus, BRIC! Celebrate Brooklyn backed its artists with an orchestra of sound/ feelings.

I really wanted to see Emily Wells. She has been on “my list” of ones to watch, and, at BRIC!, she did not fail. Her voice is naturally ethereal; misting over verses as if words fall from clouds like rain. Thus, having her backed by an orchestra felt fulfilling. The Metropolis Ensemble made the fullness of her voice and songs feel transcendent, of which the transformation was totally “BRIC!” I love this series for multiple reasons. I love that it is for the community and accessible to all. I love that it bring exceptional artists, for Free, to those that, otherwise, would not see or know them. Yet, this edition of BRIC! Celebrate Brooklyn presented that festival as an opportunity for artists to explore music.

At times, for an artist, the only playfulness that seems come on stage is with the lighting or set. How to revamp music, especially your own, to yourself might feel impossible. Hence, Tortoise felt like a fresh reminder that sound is sensory. Yes, that seems obvious, but how many times do you observe or even remember that you have sense. Hence, music responds and moves to your ability to listen; every frequency and vibration meant to spike your physical reaction to lead to a spiritual one. Thus, there was an undeniable soulfulness in how Emily Wells and Tortoise hushed the crowd to simply listen. It was beautiful.

Sometimes, music will make you cry, laugh, dance, dream, or even fall in love. The point is that it is an experience, and there are certain artist that allow you to reflect on the beauty of that. Music is an experience, and the fact that you are alive to have it is stunning. BRIC! Celebrate Brooklyn reminds people/ the BK community of this truth. As families picnicked, friends laid out on the grass, and the sun switched with the moon, it was hard not to feel really good about the moment you were having. For More Information On BRIC!
