Concert Review: Charlotte Cardin Gives That Empire Love At Rough Trade

Charlotte Cardin is currently headIining her first tour, and it should be called the “Do you have a Bae? Tour”. With the wonderful NIIA and Aliocha as openers, the night felt like a jazzed dedication to gorgeous voices singing to the ugliness of Love. Having such great openers made Cardin come off like a queen and her songs like royal jewelry on display.

Being in a sea of couples, I noticed more Cardin’s music relationship with love. “Big Boy”, “Kids”, “Like It Doesn’t Hurt”, and “Blackened Eyes” felt like the tracks of Empire’s Cookie and Lucious Lyon’s love. You may laugh, but I could not help but think of the notorious, toxic couple and how they, like Cardin’s music, show the addictiveness of bad relationships. Somehow, we grow enamored with the “push/pull” dynamic, and the exhaustion and exhilaration of discovering our lover’s constant betrayals and beauty. In each song, Cardin’s lyrics fluffed and broke apart, like pure cotton, the the ability of a man to inject our mind with poetry while he injects our heart with poison.

Kind words can only cover up cruel actions for so long, and the aftermath becomes a journey of unlearning that any purpose to love is tied with a purpose to hurt. Like Snoh Aalegra, Cardin has an “old world” voice. She sounds as if Judy Garland and Billie Holliday united to make Billie Garland, a.k.a Charlotte Cardin. Moreover, her excitement at being a headliner, and seeing a crowd packed to even hear her sing in French, Sous Les Jupes, highlighted her talent. To have a gem of a voice and a crown of wisdom is a blessing, but, with how kind she is, she deserves it. Thus, you felt even more her lyrics and electro-blues compositions on heartache; good people are the ones that most know heartbreak because we are the ones that have the most heart.

Charlotte Cardin is the sweet girl that has fallen for bad boys, but has the voice to sing back, “No more!”. From “ Main Girl” to “Talk Talk”, the crowd of lovers and those eager to become one looked at Charlotte like a Millennial Teacher of Relationships. We learned how to love Love, while also analyze when we are loving to be hurt. For More Information On Charlotte Cardin Click Here.
