Concert Review: Chelsea Cutler Is Old Soul For A New Generation
Currently playing out sold-out shows at Terminal 5, including tonight, it is hard not to watch Chelsea Cutler and feel like she is the freshest artist to feel like a classic. Her pop-scape sounds are intertwined with a “Euphoria Generation” that can wave a synth-wave like a flag and drop a bassline like a bag of bricks. Her soundscapes twinkled and bulked, but her topic of lightness remained constantly bright.
The wonder of Chelsea Cutler is not only that she is a talented song-writer and a vibrant performer; it is that she is purposeful. Seeing her packed room filled with three floors of human beings was moving because Chelsea is not veiled; her show is about loving yourself in the face of a world that will not love you back. I don’t think we discuss enough the meanness of this world and the real darkness that ensues from bullying and powerful people shaming those that have yet to see their own worth.
Chelsea is a rising, power player in music and mental health awareness, in part, because she is so sweet; her kindness might as well leap from the stage with her. Honestly, if Kindness could incarnate and have played the drums or grabbed a guitar, it would have just to join Chelsea on her tour. It was exciting to see someone so young and powerful move masses of people to care about how they cared, and it was a prominent attraction to her show. All her fans, even before she came on, openly discussed their love for her, amongst each other, as if she was the one that defended them from bullies.

It was no wonder that tracks like, “Mess,” “Love You More,” and “How To Be Human” were absorbed by the audience as if she was singing their journal entries. Her calm tone soothed and spread over dynamic soundscapes to, in some ways, exemplify her message: no matter how crazy life gets, you can be your own sanity. I like that message a lot.
