Concert Review: Clavvs Are Building A New Sound At Knitting Factory

Maybe, I am picking this up for the first time, but there is a rise in electric duos across music. From Sofi Tukker to Delaporte, there is an international surge of men and women uniting for music, and I am shook about it. Perhaps, the brightest union between men and women is led by a synth-wave. At least, that is what it felt like at CLAVVS’ Knitting Factory show.

Excited to present new and classic sounds, CLAVVS comes off like the holy, symphonic union between Graham Marsh and Amber Renee. My my readers know I LOVE BRUNO MARS, and Marsh has been a producer for him, Kid Cudi, and Nas. He and Amber are a perfect example of the pitfalls in the “rising artist” title. These two are seasoned and have had years honing their craft/ determination, which is something you feel in how they speak and present themselves to the audience. In essence, THEY AREN’T NEW, but they are fresh in forming a transient sound that feels weighted by Trip Hop baselines.

While you could definitely categorize them as “psychedelic,” they feel too “heavy” or purposeful to carry the flightiness of this term. Their form of psychedelia feels plotted like someone who took an acid trip through R&B to confront their love choices. From “Like Daggers” to “Bloom,” they present their show as if they are in two separate, invisible rooms. Room 1 holds Graham; trying to discover how sounds can enrapture a mind so as to let his heart free. Meanwhile, Room 2 holds Renee; singing to her walls with a combination of lightness and lightening that readies to tear them down. While they keep to their spaces, they feel like a united front playing to spiritual freedom of music.

The most exciting aspect of CLAVVS is that they truly sound different. They are trying to create a sound that could, potentially, mark a music revolution. I know that seems extreme, but, from Prince to Migos, you never know who will spark a new soundscape that will, then, spark a new music movement or culture shift.Yet, what makes CLAVVS so exciting is that is their subtle intention, and they have the talent to do it.
