Concert Review: Danileigh Gives Aaliyah Vibes At S.O.B’s

By the time Danileigh came to the stage, Nimic Revenue has given a fire performance that left every one feeling like life was their winning game. Add on that S.O.B’s had become a twerk factory thanks to a dancehall mix that would have made Lady Saw proud, and there was no denying the audience was ready to love Danileigh. Yet, she did not come solely for their adoration. She came for their admiration.

#DaniLeigh – “The Plan”

The 90’s/2000’s era of R&B is coming back and Danileigh proved with good reason. She gave the catchy hooks and choruses that make catching your man in his “games” feel fun. Of course, reality is much different, but part of why we love R&B is because it makes us miss or curse the one that made us fall in love, even if we haven’t met him or her yet. Tracks like, “On” and “Easy” have Danileigh making us feel the vibes of Aaliyah or Brenda K Starr, of which she can easily fall into their vocal range. She has a voice and personality that feels honeyed and harmless, which is perfect because it leaves her fans asking, “Who would hurt sweet Danileigh?” Yet, her choreography showed she can defend herself.

DaniLeigh – Be Yourself (Official Dance Video)

From “Lil Bebe” to “Do It To Me,” Danileigh was summoning her backup dancers to break into full Janet Jackson-esque routines. The addition of dance was like somebody giving you a cupcake, and then saying, “Actually, have two more on the house!” The audience already loved her, but when she danced, it gave her their acknowledgement that “she gets down.” No matter how far she goes, she will remember the house parties that molded her. (Nothing like them!) Moreover, her dancing and outfit change elevated the caliber of her show to prove you do not need to be in MSG to get a full, thoughtful performance. She proved my theory that, at every level of your artistic career, you should act like a star so when you, finally, reach the sky no one questions whether you belong there; instead, they ask what took you so long!

The fact that Danileigh felt like she was one of us revealed not only her rise but also the distances she could go. When Danileigh sang a little in Spanish and brought out the Dominican Flag, the roof could have fallen on us and everybody would have still cheered. From Cardi B to Beyoncé, there is an awareness that a little Español does not hurt, it heals. (Hello, Despacito!) Spanglish with a latin flared R&B can turn anyone’s body into jazz.
