Declan J Donovan Will Meet You In Vienna

It was a brief set, at Rockwood, but it was enough to make onlookers note Declan J Donovan as a “love singer;” the songwriter you turn on to sing to complicated relationships. From being with someone you don’t love to wondering whether “love at first sight” is worth the distance, Declan adding nuance to the “typical. love song.”

First, his voice is, immediately, noticeable, in part, because it is so light and crisp. He bites into notes like one would the flakiest croissant and uses emotions like the jam in between. His ability to go higher in range and flutter into such notes was beautiful and warming. Suddenly, viewers were able to listen more as Declan brought an unabashed delicacy through his music. He was so tender in how he carried his pitch, he might as well have been an opera singer.

Declan J Donovan – Vienna

When you are trained in opera, you are taught that the lighter you go in voice, the higher you range in octave. Part of what makes this training so hard is that goes against our very nature; we believe we have to push a note when, in fact, you have to caress it. I kept on thinking of this as Declan sang because, for him, the lighter you go in voice, the higher you in emotion, which only amplified his love songs. When you don’t feel like you are with the right one or acting like the right one, it is hard to feel “higher.” Declan’s music swam in this point, and it made him feel like the new, relatable crooner for romance.
